h Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) (Hangul: 조선민주주의인민공화국, Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a state in East Asia, occupying the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. Its capital and largest city is Pyongyang. The Korean Demilitarized Zone serves as the buffer area between North Korea and South Korea. The Amnok River is the border between North Korea and China. The Tumen River in the extreme north-east is the border with Russia.

The peninsula was governed by the Korean Empire until it was occupied by Japan following the Russo-Japanese War of 1905. It was divided into Soviet and American occupied zones in 1945, following the end of World War II. North Korea refused to participate in a United Nations-supervised election held in the south in 1948, which led to the creation of separate Korean governments for the two occupation zones. Both North and South Korea claimed sovereignty over the peninsula as a whole, which led to the Korean War of 1950. The 2009 Iranian presidential election was held on 12 June 2009 in Iran.[1] It is the tenth presidential election to be held in the country. If no candidate receives a majority of support, a run-off election will be held 19 June 2009.[2] The incumbent is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The Iranian reform movement has attempted to unite behind a single candidate. Former President Mohammad Khatami had been the leading opponent to Ahmadinejad until he left the race and endorsed former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi.[3] Former Speaker of the Majlis Mehdi Karroubi, another Reformist, is also running, as is former Commander of Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Mohsen Rezaee, a Conservative. The election has seen huge candidate rallies in Iranian cities,[2] and turnout was very high with around 75 percent of the electorate voting.[4]

With two-thirds of the votes cast, the Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's official news agency, called the election for incumbent Ahmadinejad. At the time it was announced, he had received 66% of the votes cast.[5] Early local time on June 13, the Iranian election commission announced that Ahmadinejad had won with 65% of the votes, against 32% to Mousavi.[6][7]

Strengthening Civic Participation

President Obama began his career as a community organizer. He understands the power of getting involved in our own communities to shape the issues that affect our lives. Local organizations and solutions are making a real difference in our lives. It is by working together to shape and influence government on the local, state, and federal level that we become more powerful and effective.
In our last posting for the Open Government Initiative, we explored how government can create more opportunities for participation in government. Now we address what government can and should be doing to support civil society – non-profits, faith-based organizations, professional associations, and neighborhood schools – in helping to educate and prepare the public to engage with critical public issues and play a more effective role in new, open public policymaking processes. Just as the scientific community trains its professionals to participate in peer reviewing government grants, we want to identify new opportunities and strategies for communities to create the civic literacy to support engagement.
What we learned in Phase I
You suggested a number of ideas in the Open Government Brainstorm. Some recommended training neighborhood facilitators in proven dialogue methods to engage a group on issues of common concern. Others underscored the need for civic toolkits, including neutral discussion guides to facilitate community discussions on how to address local problems. Still others suggested forums on national topics, such as combining deliberation and service on Martin Luther King Day and creating a website for groups across the nation to share their conclusions. How You Can Help
As we seek to identify immediate policy changes that will promote greater civic participation, we need to know from you:
  1. What is the appropriate and most effective role for the government to play in fostering greater civic participation? Should the government develop content, fund the work of organizations that teach civic education, establish platforms to connect communities to each other and to government?
  2. Do you know of best practices, whether from local, state or foreign governments, or foundations that foster and support civic participation? What are the most effective tools to get people to participate?
  3. What skills and subject areas are the most important for civic literacy today? How do we promote the kind of civic education necessary to enable people to make greater use of government data, like the information available on Data.gov, or participate in online commenting processes, like this one or regulations.gov?

The Words

Recently Dr. Wesch spoke at the University of Manitoba where he explained the the basis of this video in a talk entitled, "Michael Wesch and the Future of Education." I found it fascinating! He describes how he so naturally incorporates emerging technologies into his courses from the smallest seminar type class to the largest lecture theatre filled class.

More importantly he not only talks about the technologies but how he encourages extraordinary participation and collaboration from his students by engaging them in meaningful learning activities.

Dubbed "the explainer" by popular geek publication Wired because of his viral YouTube video that summarizes Web 2.0 in under five minutes, cultural anthropologist Michael Wesch brought his Web 2.0 wisdom to the University of Manitoba on June 17.

During his presentation, the Kansas State University professor breaks down his attempts to integrate Facebook, Netvibes, Diigo, Google Apps, Jott, Twitter, and other emerging technologies to create an education portal of the future.

"It's basically an ongoing experiment to create a portal for me and my students to work online," he explains. "We tried every social media application you can think of. Some worked, some didn't."

The Clickable Newspaper Instead of the Textbook

QR codes are not yet mainstream in the States. Information rich QR codes, CodeZ QR for example, are growing at the enterprise level, but haven't yet gone mainstream. Given the $99 iPhone it's not far away. But TinyUrls are here now. There is no reason that TinyUrls cannot be added to a newspaper to create a new information product to replace one size fits all textbooks in K-12 education.

High School Ed: 19th Century Printing of Newspapers

19th century letterpress printing of a newspaper with a stop cylinderpress and metal type. The press is a Perreau & Brault manufactured in the 1870s in Paris and she is part of the antique press collection of the MIAT in Gent, Belgium. This antique press was restored by a group of volunhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifteers at the MIAT (Museum of Industrial Archaeology and Textile) and she was used here for the first time to print 1200 newspapers (double sided so 2400 impression) of the 'Bornemsche Gazet' of 1831 for the 'Eén' television program Fata Morgana of Sunday 22 July 2007.

"Designing the laptop, it turned out, was probably the easiest piece of the puzzle. OLPC founder and chairman Nicholas Negroponte had originally touted the XO as the '$100 laptop', but in order to produce the machine at such a low cost they would need to convince dozens of national governments to purchase tens of millions of laptops. Instead, the program was until very recently only able to convince the government of one single country, Uruguay, which ordered 100,000 machines back in October of 2007 at $188 per machine. Fast-forward 20 months - and 200,000 more laptops - and the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU) is just a couple month's away from delivering the very last green and white laptops into the hands of every single Uruguayan primary school student.

As I described in an earlier article, the first two years of the OLPC deployment in Uruguay 'have been characterized by implementation and incubation. The laptops have been deployed to schools, manuals have been created, tech savvy volunteer groups have been formed, wireless internet connections have been established, teachers have slowly learned how to implement the laptops into their curricula and classrooms, and, as Rezwan has covered previously, a community of open source programmers has developed educational applications for the laptops.'"
